Are You Ready To Start A Home Based Business?

There’s no doubt that starting a home based business is a goal, or at least a dream, for many people.  After all, just think of the positives:  since you are the boss, you don’t answer to anyone but yourself – except maybe your customers, you don’t have to worry about the price of gas for the daily commute, and you can pick and choose your own hours and set your day up as you see fit.

However, there are some serious considerations you need to deal with before you venture down this road.  Think it through, and ask yourself some hard and fast questions.

Likely, one of the foremost questions will be should you hold on to your current job, at least for the time being, while you work at establishing, or starting, your home based business.  If you do, how many hours in a day will you be able to devote to your own business?  Do you have any extra hours you can put aside either before or after the day at your current job, or are you willing to give up your weekends?

What about the logistics of where you will work from home?  Do you have a room that you can turn into a home office, where you can be free from household distractions?

How much of your blood, sweat and tears are you willing to put into your new venture?  What if there is a large learning curve?  Will you stick to your determination and learn what is necessary?  Even if your business is going to be around a hobby, craft, service, or anything else that you are already totally familiar with, don’t be deluded into thinking you know it all.  You may still have to learn all of the management aspects of running a home based business.  You may be working from home now, but there will still be issues like bookkeeping to deal with.  Will you do it yourself, or are you going to hire someone for these aspects of your business?

Once starting your home based business, do you know how to market it?  People will need to know about you, so how are you going to make that happen?  Are you going to market online or offline?  Which would be most effective for your business?  How much money have you put aside for these marketing efforts?

And another important question.  How are you planning to finance your new, small, startup business?  Do you have, or can you afford, all the equipment that will be necessary?

Don’t wait to answer these questions.  You should have thought all of this before you start your new venture.

Lets face it. Not all home based businesses are the same. I have the liberty of seeing some pretty crazy stuff come into my inbox and what I have come to realize is there is a lot of crap out there.

This Is What I Know

Here is what I know. 95% of people in the home based business spend more than they make every month in business and yet they all have the audacity to say that they have “THE MOST AWESOME” business opportunity on the planet. Blah, Blah Blah. It’s actually quite annoying and repels rather than attracts people.

Here’s What I Know As Well

Another thing that I know is the that most people in this industry are bottom feeders. I don’t mean that in the way that you think. What I mean is they are always talking to people that are below their level of competence. Tied with the fact that 98% of network marketing companies don’t have the slightest clue on how to solely leverage the internet to build their business, it’s a recipe for disaster.

What Attracts C-Level Executives?

There is an untapped market out there of sharp, highly educated and intelligent top level executives out there that are looking for what we have in our industry, however, they are not looking for just any business. The CFO of a financial services company is not looking for some MLM that sells products.

The Problem

These executives already make a quarter of a million all the way up to millions of dollars a year. How many products have to move through an organization to make a half a million dollars? Keep in mind, the commission on a product is roughly . You would have to have 100,000 products moving through your organization to make a half million bucks. Yes this is hypothetical and don’t quote me on the exactness of the numbers as I know your compensation plan is special and has a 10×50 overide with a triple forced matrix. Yada Yada. Lastly, it takes years to put together organizations that produce that kind of income. 5-10 years of gut wrenching work. Can it be done, sure.. But it’s not what top level execs are looking to do.

The Solution

Now lets take a look at the top tier direct sales industry. There are only a few companies out there that have product lines that are very in demand in the market and pay in upwards of a K per sale. Couple that with the ability to use attraction and direct response marketing all over the world, you have a way to create a whole lot of money. With just your own production, you sold just 50 of those products within a year, you would have a half a million bucks. Along the way, if you know how to monetize your customers, you can throw another hundred grand on top of that in affiliate commissions. Now, Mr. CFO, CEO, CIO, CMO, MD, PHD, ESQ.. Does that entice you more than a product.

Don’t Be Tied To A Title

There was a study that was done on lawyers and doctors and when asked if they enjoyed their profession, most did not. It has to be the same within a large corporation. I am sure they love the income that comes with the positions, but their family’s suffer because of the long hours away from the nest. A lot of executives have attached themselves to a title. “What do you do?” I am a doctor, or CEO of a company… They are afraid of losing that identity so they stay where they are, living a life they dont really want to be living. Top level executives are looking to the internet to find far more happiness, more time with their family and more money than they made in their initial professions.

Talk To High Achievers

Top level executives are looking for what we have in the top tier home business industry. What Can A Disaster Teach A Business Manger?

Every time a crisis hits we learn more about crisis management. When the hurricane ravaged New Orleans the country was ripped apart. People died because no one was prepared for a disaster of that scale. The morning of 9/11 stunned the world. We believed there was no way to prevent the tragedies, but since those days we have learned vital lessons about crisis management.

Pass The Buck

Both of these disasters were worse than they should have been because no one created a plan of action. FEMA had a plan. The government had some independent strategies. But no one got together.

Private citizens donated tanks for water and fuel. Unfortunately, because there was no emergency plan the ‘inspectors’ wouldn’t let them be installed because they couldn’t be ‘legally’ installed above ground and the equipment to bury them had been destroyed.

People died for lack of clean water, and succumbed to cold.

The same thing happened on 9/11. The food tents at the ground level were run by one government official who had no training. Volunteers travelled from as far away as Vancouver, BC to help, but were turned away because they were not ‘official.’

Firefighters went hungry. Volunteers went hungry. And Good Samaritans were told to go home because they were not needed, while food rotted because no one had time to prepare and serve it.

The first rule of crisis management is to create a plan. The plan should include everything, including a plan to close the business. One public speaker that talks on this subject tells audiences how it cost them 000 to go out of business – something they could have avoided with an exit strategy.

Network

The world watched in horror as the waters swept over New Orleans. Videos were shot when the bridge collapsed bringing down dozens of cars and leaving a school bus load of children trapped in the middle of a river.

What happened next is the stuff that fills ‘disaster fiction’ novels.

Heroes emerged and went to the aid of the children in the river. Private citizens drove to New Orleans and ‘took over’ where officials failed.

Busses drove hundreds of survivors to Texas where they stayed in shelters.

A lesson was learned by the Canadian Military. When the US skies were closed on 9/11 the planes were diverted to a small military base in Nova Scotia, Canada. Within hours the people were off the plans, and comfortable in people’s homes. They were fed and cared for.

This lesson is a vital one for small business owners. People are always willing to help. Networking with other business professionals is one way to have a concerned friend help you out of a situation when it happens. Not everyone has the ‘hero’ mentality. It may take time to find help, but make sure you know who to call when something goes wrong.

Make a Plan

Project Managers and Systems Analysis are taught to create plans of actions in case of emergency. It is hard for a small business or ecommerce business owner to understand what might go wrong. But they can still create a plan of action.

This should include managing family affairs, financial difficulties, and health issues. The biggest threat to most small businesses is the failing health of the business owners. It is amazing how many managers do not create an emergency package so someone else can control the business if they have a heart attack or are in an auto accident.

Learn

There are dozens of crisis management books written about 9/11 and the New Orleans disaster. Take the time to read them. Learn from the professionals. Understanding the basic concepts of crisis management can help business owners learn how to handle their own problems.

A small business owner will hopefully never face a problem the level of the above situations, but their failure to plan for emergencies can leave their loyal employees without a job, and cost them their savings. It can also leave the business owner facing the loss of their house, or even bankruptcy.
